Carrie Helser (USA) hat mir letztes Jahr ein ganz besonderes Weihnachtsgeschenk gemacht: Ihr Freund Willyum Rowe hat für das Jahr 2020 ein Kunst-Abonnement als eine Art Spendenaktion für sich selbst konzipiert: Jeder Abonnent erhält monatlich von ihm ein Original-Kunstwerk, das in dem eigens dafür gestalteten „Museums-Umschlag“ aufbewahrt werden kann. Carrie hat ein Abo für mich gekauft.

Last year Carrie Helser (USA) gave me a very special Christmas present: Her friend Willyum Rowe has designed an art subscription for the year 2020 as a kind of fundraiser for herself: Each subscriber will receive an original work of art from him each month, which can be kept in the specially designed „museum envelope“. Lynn Skordal und ich haben uns vor vielen Jahren online kennengelernt – seit dem kollaborieren wir kontinuierlich. Diese Freundschaft ist besonders – uns trennen etwa 8.000 km (5.000 Meilen) Luftlinie, aber im Herzen und im Geiste sind wir verbunden.
Diesmal hat Lynn mir neben der fertiggestellten gemeinsamen Collage und einem neuen Starter auch ihr selbstpubliziertes Magazin „What I did during the pandemic by Donald J. Trump“ zugesendet. Sie schreibt dazu: „Das Coronavirus tauchte vor vier Monaten in den Vereinigten Staaten auf, und heute erreichen wir die grausame Statistik von mehr als 100.000 Amerikanern, die an Covid-19 gestorben sind. Das ist mehr als die Zahl der Amerikaner, die im Korea-Krieg, im Vietnam-Krieg, im Irak-Krieg und im Afghanistan-Krieg zusammengenommen gestorben sind. Wir sind der planetarische Brennpunkt, und die Zahl der Todesopfer steigt weiter an.
Zu Ehren dieser Leistung teile ich ein kleines Zine, das ich für Familie und Freunde gemacht habe (ich würde sagen, „genießen“ Sie es, aber das ist wirklich nicht das richtige Wort, oder?“ Das war am 23. Mai 2020. Heute, am 24. Juli 2020, sind 4.038.748 Menschen in den USA infiziert und 144.304 Menschen in den USA an Covid-19 verstorben.

Überhaupt ist ihr Blog sehenswert – und man kann dort noch viele Arbeiten zum Thema Trump und Corona sehen und ihre wundervolle Kunst.

Lynn Skordal and I met online many years ago – since then we have been collaborating continuously. This friendship is special – we are separated by about 8.000 km (5,000 miles) as the crow flies, but we are connected in heart and mind.
This time Lynn has sent me her self-published magazine „What I did during the pandemic by Donald J. Trump“ in addition to the finished collage and a new starter. She writes about it: „The coronavirus emerged four months ago in the United States, and today we attain the gruesome statistic of more than 100,000 Americans dead from Covid-19. That’s more than the number of Americans who died in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War and the Afghanistan War, combined. We are the planetary hot spot and the death toll continues to rise. In honor of this achievement, I’m sharing a little zine I made for family and friends (I’d say „enjoy“ it, but that’s really not the right word, is it?).“

Kürzlich habe ich für die Kunstbuch Biennale in Italien das erste Exemplar zu diesem Thema gemacht – hier nun ein zweites. Ausgangsmaterial für dieses Künstlerbuch war ein völlig ruiniertes Buch der Insel Bücherei Nr. 192 – H. Chr. Andersen – Bilderbuch ohne Bilder.
Dieses Buch geht an Carrie Helser – eine Mail Art Freundin in den USA.

Recently I made the first copy on this topic for the Art Book Biennial in Italy – here is a second one. The starting material for this artist’s book was a completely ruined book from the Insel Bücherei No. 192 – H. Chr. Andersen – Bilderbuch ohne Bilder (Picture Book without pictures).
This book goes to Carrie Helser – a mail art friend in the USA.

Es ist vollbracht!
Das zweite Buch der Ungleichen Zwillinge mit Antonio Martin Ferrand ist fertig und somit das Zwillingspaar vollständig.
In einem vorherigen Artikel habe ich den ersten Zwilling gezeigt, von mir gestartet und von Antonio beendet. Hier nun das Buch, das Antonio gestartet und ich fertiggestellt und an ihn zurückgeschickt habe (Video und Fotos am Ende des Artikels Fotos). Vielen Dank für´s Mitmachen!
Ausgangsmaterial: Insel Bücherei Nr. 545 Tilman Riemenschneider im Taubertal

Dieses Buch ist Teil eines fortlaufenden Kollaborationsprojektes namens „Die ungleichen Zwillinge“, welches ich im Jahr 2018 initiiert habe.
Zwei gleiche Bücher aus der Insel Bücherei dienen als Grundlage.
Diese werden von mir zusammengestellt und an den jeweiligen Kollaborationspartner verschickt. Beide gestalten eins der beiden Bücher als Starter, beide beenden das jeweils andere, so dass am Ende zwei Originale Bücher entstanden sind. Jeder erhält sein gestartetes Buch zurück.
Die Rahmenbedingungen habe ich modifiziert: Bei „Reloaded“ geht es nicht mehr darum, den Buchkörper zu verändern, sondern das entkernte Buch auf dem Umschlag und den verbliebenen Innenseiten zu bearbeiten.

This book is part of an ongoing project by Sabine Remy called „The Unequal Twins“, started 2018. Two identical books from the Insel Bücherei, saved from the waste paper container, serve as a basis and will be sent by me, Sabine Remy, to the respective collaboration partner. Both design one of the two books as a starter, both finish the other, so that at the end two original books are created. Everyone gets his started book back.
I have modified the basic conditions: In „Reloaded“ it is no longer about changing the book body, but about editing the de-inked book on the cover and the left inside pages.

HANNELORE BARON : A COLLAGE AND ASSEMBLAGE EXHIBITION from ERIC MINH SWENSON on Vimeo.

Durch einen Zufall bin ich auf Hannelore Baron (1926 – 1987) aufmerksam geworden. Auch sie war ein „Survivor“, denn ihre jüdische Familie floh während des 2. Weltkrieges letztlich bis nach New York. Sie schuf sehr persönliche, abstrakte Collagen und Assemblagen, die sie ab Ende der 1960er Jahre ausstellte. Weitere Informationen (Biografie, Werke …) findet man auf der homepage „The Estate of Hannelore Baron“ – (alles auf Englisch – wer eine schnelle Übersetzung ins Deutsche möchte: Text kopieren und bei deepl.com – kostenlose Version – einfügen, geht blitzschnell und die Übersetzungen sind prima – unbezahlte Werbung). In dem obigen Video, leider auch nur in englisch, kann man viele ihrer Arbeiten sehen – die mich auch an Werke von Joseph Cornell und Kurt Schwitters denken lassen. Ich freue mich über die Entdeckung.

By chance I became aware of Hannelore Baron (1926 – 1987). She too was a „survivor“, because her Jewish family fled during the 2nd World War, ultimately all the way to New York. She created very personal, abstract collages and assemblages, which she exhibited from the late 1960s onwards. More information (biography, works …) can be found on the homepage „The Estate of Hannelore Baron“, and in the video above you can see many of her works – which also make me think of works by Joseph Cornell and Kurt Schwitters. I am happy about the discovery.

Martin Schoeller – Survivors

Martin Schoellers Ausstellung „Survivors – Faces of the life after the Holocaust“ (verlängert bis 26.7.2020) im UNESCO-Welterbe Zollverein zu sehen war außerordentlich beeindruckend.
Anläßlich des 75. Jahrestages der Befreiung des Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslagers Auschwitz-Birkenau schuf Martin Schoeller 75 Porträts von Holocaust-Überlebenden in der Internationalen Holocaust Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Die unter jedem Portrait befindlichen „Kurzportraits“ des fotografierten Menschen, mit den Eckdaten über die Lebenssituation während des Holocaust und einem eindrücklichen Statement des Betroffenen, geben einen persönlichen und nachdrücklichen Einblick in die tragischen Ereignisse dieser Zeit.
Der architektonische Rahmen der Kokerei der ehemaligen Zeche Zollverein konnte brillanter nicht gewählt werden – auch diese Anlage ist ein „Survivor“, denn das einst größte Steinkohlebergwerk Europas wurde 1986 stillgelegt und im Dezember 2001 auf die Welterbeliste der UNESCO gesetzt. Das Ziel der Welterbe ist es, „Natur- und Kulturgüter der Menschheit, die einen außergewöhnlichen universellen Wert haben, also sowohl einzigartig als auch authentisch sind“, zu erhalten. Martin Schoelle’s exhibition „Survivors – Faces of the life after the Holocaust“ (extended untill 26. July 2020) at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein was extremely impressive.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp, Martin Schoeller created 75 portraits of Holocaust survivors at the International Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. The „short portraits“ of the people photographed underneath each portrait, with key data on their living conditions during the Holocaust and an impressive statement by the person affected, provide a personal and emphatic insight into the tragic events of that time.
The architectural setting of the coking plant of the former Zollverein colliery could not have been chosen more brilliantly – this plant/ facility is also a „survivor“, because what was once Europe’s largest coal mine was closed down in 1986 and placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 2001. The aim of the World Heritage Site is „to preserve natural and cultural assets of mankind which have an extraordinary universal value, i.e. are both unique and authentic“. Glücklicherweise wurde die sehr sehenswerte Ausstellung „Martin Schoeller“ im NRW Forum Düsseldorf bis zum 13.9.2020 verlängert, so dass ich sie mir doch noch anschauen konnte.
Es gibt einen mehrteiligen digitalen Rundgang durch die Ausstellung, die das NRW Forum zusammen mit TheDorf – Ein Magazin für Düsseldorf – erstellt hat. Im Gespräch sind NRW-Forum-Mitarbeiterin Bernadette Färber, die Studentin Rosa Schulz und die Künstlerin Pola Sieverding. Ich habe mir alle Videos zu den einzelnen Werkgruppen angeschaut, wodurch sich mir weitere Aspekte der Ausstellung erschlossen haben.
Weil mich besonders die Serie „KAYAPO“ beeindruckt hat, reposte ich hier exemplarisch eines der Rundgang-Videos:

Fortunately the very worth seeing exhibition „Martin Schoeller“ in the NRW Forum Düsseldorf was extended until 13.9.2020, so that I could have a look at it after all.
There is a multi-part digital tour through the exhibition, which was created by NRW Forum together with TheDorf – A Magazine for Düsseldorf. NRW-Forum staff member Bernadette Färber, student Rosa Schulz and artist Pola Sieverding are talking. I watched all the videos for the individual groups of works, which opened up further aspects of the exhibition for me.
Because I was particularly impressed by the series „KAYAPO“, I am posting one of the tour videos here as an example (see above).
