english version:
The MUDAM – Musee d´Art Modernism – in Luxembourg is for me a real new discovery. The long journey was well worth it! The architecture of the museum, by Ieoh Ming Pei, is modern, spacious, reduced, clear and radiates a wonderful atmosphere for the art exhibited there.
In addition to its permanent collection of international contemporary art, MUDAM also hosts temporary exhibitions. I went there because of Jeff Wall – and discovered the Japanese artist Susumi Shinigu. His works deal with natural forces and weather phenomena, the force of gravity and the energy of the wind, water in its various states of aggregation. His beautiful mobiles and sculptures and fountains are always in motion – graceful and elegant. I was completely fascinated!
But the Jeff Wall exhibition is also impressive. „Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition Appearance gathers 30 or so of his large-format photographs and light boxes. Offering a broad view of his work from the end of the 1970s to today, it creates a dialogue between some of his most emblematic works and a significant ensemble of recent photographs. The whole show is articulated around a notion that constantly resonates in his work: the question of the enigma of the image. Through this prism, various preoccupations that have been running through his work since the beginning and have been developed in his latest works in remarkable ways, like the questions of the figure, the gesture, the speech, the gaze, the landscape or the image itself, are openly approached.“ (Source)
I was very lucky to arrive on time for a free guided tour (through the whole museum!) in German, which was also very good.
So it was a wonderful day trip – and I can only recommend the museum.
Both exhibitions run until 6.1.2019
